Global Politics portfolio

Global Politics for me...

For me global politics was a subject which constantly required to analyze things from different perspectives. It was a challenging subject in which we had to not only learn the course concepts but also know how to apply them. The thing I consider most important in order to fully learn during this course was to truly engage and make sure that you were familiar with each unit. In Global Politics I had to constantly connect things with each other and to understand that everything that happens in our world is related in some way.

What are the implications generated by a possible Trump reelection for East Asia?

As we approach new elections the two main candidates are Joe Biden and Donald Trump. Biden for the Democrats and Trump aiming for a reelection with the republicans. I will try to discuss how the elections will have an effect on Global Politics and specifically the economic implications each result means for the region of East Asia. The elections this year are crucial for this region in the way that who is elected will highly influence the economic growth and development of this region and their economical approach to international exports and trading.

The past 4 years with the Trump administration we have seen a lot of restrictions to Chinese companies and products inside the US and the possible reelection would likely continue this trend for the next four years. For the past term Trump has used his power to increase the tariffs of chinese goods and we have also seen an increase in tension with the relations with China. On the other hand if the power goes to the democrats, Will it really be different? According to many sources this will indeed change. Max Baucus (a former US ambassador in China) declared that with the election of Joe Biden the US will start to deal with China in a much more “traditional way”. For the chinese this would mean that their product will be much more profitable inside the US territory and that further implementation of chinese services in the US will be allowed. However this opinion could as well be biased. The ambassador who stated these served during Obama’s term and Joe Biden was also de Vice-president at the time. This means his opinion might possibly trend to favoring the democrats. Even if this opinion might be somewhat biased he can be called an expert on the topic and there might be an insight to what would happen if Joe Biden is elected.

Moreover the elections will not modify the relations with China in day and the problem is all but solved in the case of Biden winning the election. It is not as some might suggest a complete restart. Even though the tensions during the past term increased with the attitude the current president is taking in the negotiations with China the problem is not only caused by him. There is a clash of interest between both countries which is in need of further agreement to reestablish an effective cooperation and a resolution that benefits both sides.

In the past we have seen economic relations between both countries have been accompanied by economic growth as well. Through globalization the interconnection between countries is ever more important and both the chinese and the americans benefit from the import of each other's goods. The manufacturing occuring in China is really important to the US because many of their major brands such as Nike, General Motors, and Boeing have manufacturing plants in chinese territory. The cheap work in China is reliable to all these major US companies as their manufacturing costs are lower and therefore their profit is higher. A higher income of these companies also means an economical boost to the US economy. On the other hand to Chinese the US is also really important because they are benefitted by all this manufacturing going on in their country because it means jobs and also a money income for them. China has attributed much of its economic growth during the past 20-30 years to the international companies investing in their country and up to date a considerable part of their GDP is generated through this sector.

The elections not only affect the economy of China but also other Asian countries who are in a similar situation China is in. A clear example of this is India, India heavily relies on the US in an economic way. The US is India’s top trading partner with a massive amount of 88.5 billion US dollars in bilateral trade. However India has benefited from the obstacles the US has created in trading with China as many Indian products and services are being implemented thanks to the tariffs and bans to China such as the one with Huawei. India as a developing country and major power in south asia has seen increments in their economy during Trump’s administration and they as well as the US have not the best relations with their neighboring country. The rivalry between India and China is not only economical but also political as there have been disputes over their border and India has not hesitated in confronting Chinese allegations. India is also reluctant to accept the proposals Biden offers with Kamala Harris as her vice-president. She has openly objected against India over the Kashmir issue. The victory of Biden will certainly not benefit India because Trump has consistently been open to India and the connections between both countries have improved during these past years. Trump has been clear in his support to India and unlike Kamala Harris he has criticized Pakistan in the Kashmir dispute. In general a reelection of Trump would mean a great boost to the manufacturing industry in India as an attempt to weaken China by the republicans.

On a global aspect the elections have a huge impact when it comes to Global Politics. Even though the US alone only accounts for 5% of the world populations its economy represents the 20% of the global income. This is why it is so important for other states to maintain the connections they have with the US and why they should care about the result of the elections. The candidate elected is a great factor to continue the link and import and export of goods to other countries. This year both candidates differ a lot between their international policies and some might argue that the victory of Biden would benefit foreign countries as his policy is not as closed to the US as Trump’s is. We have seen multiple examples during Trump’s administration where he has withdrawn from International agreements and turned his focus to development inside the US. In Global Politics we would argue that this approach could be considered a realist approach as its main goal is to benefit its own nation and his overall attention is drawn towards national interests. I believe in general most countries are going to be affected by the result of the elections. However some countries will be more than others. The likes of Mexico, China, and India are among a few countries that will be hoping for a favorable outcome. As the essay examined some are benefited by a candidate and others by the other. All this however depends on what they actually do after the election and if the proposals they made will be implemented and developed. I believe the biggest aspect in which the elections will have an effect is in the economic sector as the US is one of the biggest economies in the world and the development of many nations including Mexico relies on them.
